History

Green Team was created in 2018 as a subcommittee of the Environmental Sustainability Policy Advisory Committee of the City of Brantford. Members were interested in getting involved in the community, engaging volunteers, and educating the community about waste sorting. This manifested as Green Team!

Green Team attended Brantford’s Canada Festival in 2018 to observe and complete a waste audit of the festival waste. This gave members an opportunity to assess the waste diversion needs, see how the festival was run, and determine what steps were necessary in order rethink how the City deals with festival waste.

In 2019, Green Team returned to Brantford’s Canada Day Festival, managing the the waste entirely. Volunteers set up three bin waste stationed and manned them for the day, helping festival goers properly sort their waste into organics, recycling, and garbage. After the festival, volunteers spent three days sorting through the waste to ensure it is going to the right destination, and completing a waste audit to collect data on their efforts.

During the pandemic, Green Team took a hiatus but returned stronger than ever in in 2023! During the 2023 season, Green Team attended 9 community events, including returning to Brantford’s Canada Day Festival. You can read more below about the various events we attend and our work during Canada Day.

Present day, Green Team is a working volunteer committee of the City of Brantford. The team meets monthly to plan and organize event logistics, social media engagement, and education opportunities. Green Team invites community members to join us monthly or volunteer with us at various events throughout the season!
